USD/JPY: strong JGB auction pulls yen off its lows ahead of the BoJ’s 30 October decision

By admin
USD/JPY, three months. Chart by TradingView.
Where we are

USD/JPY traded near 158.15-158.16 on Tuesday after the yen gained roughly 0.2% on the day [1]. The move followed a 20-year Japanese government bond auction that drew the strongest demand in a month, with bids covering the sale 5.84 times versus 4.01 at the prior auction, and the 20-year yield falling 6 basis points to 3.71% [1]. Economic Times Markets described this as the strongest 20-year JGB auction on record, with yields dropping to their lowest since early September [2]. Separately, the US dollar index eased 0.2% to 101.77, sitting near the bottom of its recent range [1]. Japan's Nikkei fell 0.86% the same day as domestic bond yields rose, with sentiment also weighed by concerns over central bank tightening [3].

The macro picture

Four sources familiar with the Bank of Japan's deliberations told Reuters the central bank will hold its policy rate steady and modestly raise its inflation forecast for fiscal 2027 at its 29-30 October meeting, reflecting higher oil prices feeding into consumer costs [4][5]. Governor Kazuo Ueda said on 16 October that underlying inflation is broadly close to 2% and a further rise from here "cannot be tolerated," which Daiwa Securities read as a shift in focus from reaching the 2% target to sustaining it, with the durability of 2027 wage negotiations seen as key to the timing of any further hike [6]. Traders are assigning roughly 73% odds to a December rate move, according to investingLive [5]. Meanwhile the US 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.14%, up 17 basis points over four weeks and sitting above its 50-day and 200-day averages, keeping the US-Japan yield gap wide even as JGB demand improves [7].

The chart

USD/JPY's last close of 158.16 leaves the pair in a range, between its 50-day average of 157.69 and its 200-day average of 158.56 [7]. FXStreet noted the dollar was capped again at the 200-day moving average near 158.57 on Tuesday [8]. Nearest support sits at 156.40 and then 155.26, while nearest resistance is at 159.00 and then 159.78 [7]. The pair is up 0.5% over four weeks but down 0.2% over the past week, with an RSI of 54 suggesting no strong directional bias [7]. On the weekly chart, the close sits just above its 10-week average of 157.56 but below its 40-week average of 158.54 [7].

What would change our mind

A daily close back above the 200-day moving average near 158.56, or beyond resistance at 159.00 and 159.78, would point to renewed dollar strength against the yen [7]. Conversely, a close below support at 156.40 or 155.26 would suggest the yen is gaining more ground [7]. An unexpected Bank of Japan rate move, or a notably stronger-than-flagged inflation forecast upgrade, would alter the policy picture from what sources currently describe [4][5]. Continued strong demand at JGB auctions alongside falling long-dated yields, as seen this week, would reinforce the case for yen support described by State Street's Masahiko Loo [1]. A reversal in the US 10-year yield's rising trend would narrow the yield gap that has been supporting the dollar side of the pair [7].

Events to watch

Bank of Japan policy meeting, 29-30 October, rate decision and updated inflation forecasts expected [4][6][5].
Japan's Consumer Price Index for September, awaited by investors alongside UK inflation data [9].
