USD/JPY: yen firms near 157 as hot Japan CPI and BoJ meeting loom alongside the Fed

By admin
USD/JPY, three months. Chart by TradingView.
Where we are

USD/JPY closed at 156.82 on Friday, down 0.8% over the week, after touching a one-month low near 156.00 following Japan's September inflation data [1][2][3][4][5]. Japan's core consumer prices rose 2.1% year-on-year in September, back above the Bank of Japan's 2% target for the first time since December, while the core-core gauge excluding fresh food and energy jumped to 2.4% from 1.9% [6][7]. The yen strengthened broadly on the release, with Brown Brothers Harriman's Elias Haddad describing it as acting like an "ultimate refuge currency" [8]. MUFG's Lee Hardman noted the pair has been trading in a narrow range above 158.00 for much of the week, with intervention risk and a softer US dollar capping upside before the CPI print [9].

The macro picture

The Bank of Japan meets on 29-30 October and is widely expected to hold its policy rate, last raised to 1.25% in September, while possibly upgrading its inflation outlook [6][7][10][11][12]. A Reuters poll found 69% of economists expect a rate rise to 1.50% in December, continuing a roughly quarterly tightening pace, while market pricing cited by FXStreet put December hike odds near 74% [13][14][15]. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino said underlying inflation is close to the 2% target and warned that delaying policy adjustments could let price risks build [14][15][16]. The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.00%, down 8 basis points over the week, while Japan's 10-year JGB yield eased to around 2.86-2.88% as safe-haven demand grew ahead of the BoJ meeting, narrowing the yield gap that has underpinned dollar strength [1][17][5]. A 20-year JGB auction drew its strongest demand in a month, with the yield falling to 3.71%, which State Street's Masahiko Loo linked to cash flowing back into Japanese debt [18]. Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said the government sees no major divergence with the BoJ on the inflation outlook, while Japan's six-month trade deficit nearly doubled to $17.8 billion on costlier energy imports tied to the Strait of Hormuz closure [19][20].

The chart

USD/JPY sits in a daily downtrend by the moving-average rule, with the close below both the 50-day average (157.52, falling) and the 200-day average (158.55), a gap of -0.4% and -1.1% respectively [5]. The 14-day RSI reads 40, and the pair is roughly midway between its nearest support at 156.35 (next at 155.21) and nearest resistance at 158.94 (next at 159.77) [5]. The most recent confirmed swing high was 158.94 on 14 October and the swing low 157.53 on 15 October, while the 52-week range stretches from 152.08 to 163.98 [5]. On the weekly chart, the close sits below both the 10-week average (157.40) and 40-week average (158.45), consistent with the broader softening tone [5].

What would change our mind

A daily close beyond the 156.35 support or the 158.94 resistance would mark a shift from the current range-bound pattern described by MUFG and BBH [9][8][5]. A BoJ statement explicitly declaring underlying inflation has reached 2%, as flagged by Bloomberg-surveyed analysts, or renewed board dissent from government-appointed members, would reshape December rate-hike expectations and yield-differential trades [11][13]. Conversely, a Federal Reserve outcome that diverges from the currently steady-rate expectation, or a reversal in the US Treasury yield's recent decline from its 52-week high of 5.37%, would also alter the picture [1][12][5]. Any fresh verbal or actual Ministry of Finance intervention, a risk MUFG says is already capping upside, would be a further trigger [9].
