Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon earnings to test AI spending story

Microsoft and Alphabet report on Wednesday, October 28, with Amazon following on Thursday, October 29, in a week investors see as a key check on whether heavy AI investment is paying off for Big Tech.

In their most recent quarters, Google Cloud grew 82%, Microsoft’s Azure 42% and Amazon Web Services (AWS) 37%. This earnings round will show whether those growth rates can hold up.

For Microsoft, the focus is on continued Azure expansion and whether AI-related services are showing up clearly in revenue, alongside margin trends as the company keeps building out AI infrastructure. Alphabet faces questions over whether Search advertising stays resilient as AI-driven search tools spread, and whether Google Cloud can keep its growth pace while infrastructure costs rise. At Amazon, attention centres on AWS growth, operating margins and capital spending, given the scale of its investment in data centres and AI capacity.

Across all three companies, heavy spending on chips, data centres and electricity capacity reflects strong underlying demand for AI services, but it is also pushing up depreciation and financing costs. Investors are looking for clearer signs that returns are keeping pace with that spending, measured through revenue growth, profit margins and free cash flow.

Because expectations for these stocks are already high, strong results alone may not be enough to move shares if growth and spending guidance fall short of what markets have priced in. The Federal Reserve’s policy decision, due the same Wednesday as the Microsoft and Alphabet reports, adds another variable, since interest-rate expectations feed directly into valuations for high-growth technology names.

For markets, the outcome matters mainly for the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500, where AI-linked megacaps carry heavy index weight: stronger cloud growth and credible AI monetisation could support the broader rally, while weaker guidance could add pressure on technology shares and spill into sentiment toward risk assets generally.
